The Strong Hearts of the Lakota Sioux were organized by Chief's Sitting Bull, Gall, and Crow King. It was their desire to have a society, made up of the most fearless warriors of the tribe, that could meet any emergency.
Initiation into this society required only a vow; To bravely defend the tribe, to provide for the poor and needy, and to maintain good moral character. Each member of this society owned an eagle feather headdress with buffalo horns attached at the temples. This bonnet was worn when on the warpath or in actual battle. If a warrior was steadily successful and never showed cowardice in battle, he could be buried wearing his bonnet. If he did show cowardice in battle, his headdress was publicly taken from him and he was banished from the society. This humiliation was generally followed by a suicidal pledge in which the warrior would head out on his own to find the enemy and bring back scalps to reaffirm his status or meet his death in the attempt.
